The Natural Park of Cabo de Gata offers more than 60 km of unspoilt coastline! Biosphere Reserve, Cabo de Gata is a sub-desert climatic region, where stunning landscapes sometimes serve as scenery for famous adventure movies like Indiana Jones… An incredible geological, botanical and marine diversity …
Ideal in winter to find the sun and escape the gloom, amazing in spring. In Southern Spain, in Almeria Province, our walking routes go through the park of Cabo de Gata from west to east along the coast and the beautiful coves.
If you wish, we can propose you a wide variety of hikes through Cabo de Gata Natural Park to organise your time in Andalucía during few days or a week … Here is a proposition as an example, but of course we will be happy to make up a personalized holiday plan for you and eventually mix hiking activities through Cabo de Gata Natural Park with other trips you might like from our web!
First let’s get to the lighthouse of Cabo Gata and the reef of the Sirens! Its jagged rocks will contrast with the 15 km of dunes and saltpans we drove along before we started. Marine and inland scenery come together in the immensity of the sea and the steppes of Torre de Vigia, an old watchtower from the eighteenth century. Some of the nicest beaches including the well known beach of Montsul, the Mecca of cinema with its volcanic rock combed by the waves that swept over for thousands of years. Or beach of Genoveses which reminds us of the history and pirate attacks on those wild coasts.
Between coves and cliffs all the way to Los Escullos where we admire its impressive white cliffs and fossilized volcanic lava. We pass close to one of the main highlights of the park, el Cerro de los Frailes, with 2 twin volcanic peaks. Finally we get to the charming fishing village of La Isleta del Moro.
We get to Rodalquilar through a beautiful canyon, barranco del Negro. Rodalquilar is a village located on the edge of the 8 km diameter crater, which extends all the way to the coast! Surrounded by rich deposits of minerals, we get into the village through former mining installations from the Gold fever. Marine and inland scenery meet again in the immensity of the sea and the steppes. After a visit of Rodalquilar, we walk between volcanic cliffs, canyons and beaches, from the castle on the beach El Playazo to Las Negras with impressive panoramic views.
A new pilgrimage on the pirates route, between cliffs, coves and beautiful beaches where any of us who would fancy it can explore the seabed with their mask and snorkel… Also historical monuments, hamlets and fishing villages. The coastal path leads us to Aguamarga along a coastal strip where volcanic cliffs are home of large breeding colonies of seabirds and open with spectacular canyons to beautiful creeks: the creek del Plomo, Enmedio and San Pedro.
A quiet hike to climb the Mesa Roldan, a volcanic dome that appeared in a tropical climate in the middle of the ocean millions of years ago to form an island surrounded by coral reefs. We first go through the ruins of the pier to ship minerals away and keep on towards the watchtower of Mesa Roldan and the lighthouse, where we will have beautiful views of the itinerary during the previous days. Before we get back to Aguamarga, we could also relax a while on Los Muertos Beach.
It is a nice itinerary for a week walking. But of course, these lands got many more wonders that we could explore as well if you get more time: Natural reserve of Karst en Yesos in Sorbas, desert of Tabernas…
